Designing an award-winning mobile member experience

Transforming complex healthcare information into an intuitive, user-validated interface.

Collaborated with experience architects and fellow designers to shape a mobile health plan experience. Developed the visual design selected through comparative usability testing, aligned the final interface with corporate brand standards, and delivered the design assets, CSS, and design system supporting development.

The challenge

Making healthcare simpler and more accessible on mobile

Health plan information can be complex, and members have different needs, levels of digital comfort, and familiarity with insurance. The goal was to create a mobile experience that made it easier for members to find care, access their ID card, view claims, and manage their health plan while maintaining clarity, trust, and compliance with brand standards.

The experience architecture team established the research foundation, user needs, and interaction direction. My contribution focused on translating that foundation into a compelling visual experience, exploring design alternatives, and helping move the selected direction into development.

My role and scope

  • Visual design
Created and refined the visual design selected through comparative usability testing.

  • Design direction
Explored and refined competing design concepts based on the experience architecture.

  • Brand alignment
Partnered with the brand team to meet company guidelines and standards.

  • Collaboration
Worked with experience architects and designers to align on direction.

  • Implementation support
Delivered final design assets, CSS, and design guidance to the development build.

  • Coordination
Helped coordinate the design challenge, usability testing, and stakeholder reviews.

Designer reviewing three mobile concepts with remote usability test participants

The design process

A usability-tested design challenge

Three designers developed visual concepts based on the experience architects’ work. Each approach explored how to translate the established user flows and functionality into an intuitive, engaging mobile interface.

The concepts were evaluated through comparative usability testing with real members. My design was selected based on the testing results and became the visual direction for the final application.

Following selection, I worked with the brand team to ensure the interface met corporate standards and refined the visual design for implementation. I then provided the imagery, CSS, and design system assets needed to support the development team.

Supporting project artifacts

    Award recognition

The completed Florida Blue Mobile App received the 2017 GuideWell Connect Fall Award for Best Designed Mobile App.

Final design in action

A look at the completed mobile experience, combining clear navigation, recognizable visual patterns, and subtle motion design. I created the vector cityscape featured in the welcome screen and navigation headers, incorporating a parallax effect with clouds and buildings moving in opposite directions to create depth and visual interest. I also produced the animated GIF assets used by development to bring these interactions to life.

  • Welcome to Florida Blue screen with illustrated cityscape
