Ecological Identity

Summary

Stuck in the Cycle of Life . . .

Green Thumb PresonaCycle of LifeWhen asked to define my ecological identity, the first thing that anyone asks is "what exactly does that mean"? Well in short, my understanding is that it is a representation of the positive and negative impacts that you have on the environment around you and vice-versa. In general a lot of us probably feel that we have little negative impact and in the same sense even fewer positive influences unless you are some sort of naturalist and/or green-thumb type of person.

With that being said, I began to look inward to find exactly what kind of impact
I really have. While its easy to say "I always recycle" or "I own a fuel-effecient automobile" in reality how much does this actually help the environment around you. Sure every small step helps and if everyone gets on board then those little impacts can make a big difference. But lets just chart out some of those positive and negative impacts that I contribute to the environment around me.

Positive Impacts

Negative Impacts

  • Always Recycle (like religiously)
  • Do not use fertilizers or pestisides on lawn
  • Limit shower and overall water usage
  • Update automobiles for cleaner output of CO2
  • Turn off all electronic devices when not in use
  • Use fabric or paper bags when grocery shopping
  • Promote/teach recycling, waste management, and cleaniness to my kids.
  • Only buy/replace items when absolutely necessary
  • Drive performance vehicle that uses lots of fuel
  • Have infant that uses diapers and no way to recycle them
  • Have some water features on property so water consumption is higher than average home-owner
  • Use tobacco products (not good for me or environment)
  • Have to purchase food and clothes often due to childcare needs
  • Heavy consumer of electronics and technology devices
  • Spend too much money which perpetuates cycle

So at the end of the day, even though a definitely make a conscious effort to reduce my footprint on this earth . . . I like many am stuck in the everyday routine of life which creates many negative impacts on the environment. Just being human and living somewhat comfortably takes its toll on the environment. However if more people practiced some of the things that I do such as recycling all the time and what-not, we as a larger group can have a much more positive impact on the environment around us.

Statistical Analysis of Ecological Footprint. . .

Earth + Earth + Earth + Earth + Earth

While I may have mentioned before that if everyone took some of the steps that I do, the positive impacts to our environment would be great, there is still much room for improvement. According to www.myfootprint.org it would still take up to 4.99 Earths to substain our existence long-term if everyone lived like I do. Below you will find some graphical charts on the statistical analysis of my ecological footprint.

Building My Case . . .

This section holds documents and references to previous studies/reports that were developed during the course of this class. As you may find, it highlights my beliefs and mind-set about keeping our world as clean and natural as possible. Each document name will be prefixed with an application icon so you are aware of what type of files that they are. This will require you to have such applications on your machine to view.

Hope you have enjoyed the summary of my ecological identity and that this page may serve as a resource for you to define your own ecological identity.
